The importance of having a coach or mentor to improve your snowboard training

Like any sport or activity, whether starting out or wanting to improve, I think it is critical to be willing to learn from those already at a higher level. Snowboarding is no different, whether you want to learn to snowboard or take your snowboarding to the next level.

Finding a mentor is a vital part of achieving success in any field. Whilst people can take the initiative and learn by themselves, a mentor helps significantly reduce the size of the learning curve. Additionally, a mentor may have been one of the pioneers in the field of snowboarding and should be able to stop the student from making the very same mistakes they did when snowboard training. For example, mistakes when snowboard training, can result in bad habits being learnt and therefore reinforced. A mentor or coach can stop this from happening when snowboard training as he/she can give tips or technique advice whilst watching you snowboard.

Now I like to learn from the best people in any field – after all if they are one of the best in their field and teach me everything they know. You have probably already realised that learning from the best in any field can be expensive….very expensive…..so what is the alternative?

Well, the internet has allowed us all to get access to the very best information out there in any field – and FAST.  Snowboard training is no different. There are online coaches available for snowboarding!  You can learn for a fraction of the cost of having a dedicated one-on-one coach in the flesh.

I think I have found one of the best online coaching for snowboard training called snowboard addiction (great name!).  There are videos, audio and written explanations for almost everything regarding snowboarding. If you are new and want to learn to snowboard there is a great section on that with downloadable videos – so if you have an iPhone or something similar you can take it to the slopes to remind yourself before you start your sessions. Perhaps the only negative I would say is that the look of their website is not “state-of-the-art” but I can live with that as the information is top quality.
